What are Dentures?
Dentures are a way of replacing the teeth that you are missing. Dentures can be a very effective method of replacing multiple teeth in an affordable manner.
Although in modern dentistry dental bridges and dental implants are considered the ideal way to replace missing teeth, dentures are still a great alternative and suit many people.

Complete dentures
Full dentures, other known as complete dentures consist of a removable device that can be used to replace all the missing teeth in your mouth. The denture’s teeth are made out of acrylic material usually and can have metal Incorporated into them.
Complete dentures are used to fill out your appearance and leave you more confident to smile and to eat. Complete dentures may require something called a rear line which is a type of maintenance for a complete denture and this option can last anywhere from 5 to 10 years.
Acrylic partial dentures
This type of denture is made from acrylic materials. Acrylic partial dentures are designed to replace missing teeth. They usually will have clips that attach onto your existing teeth to hold it in place.
They are a cost effective way of replacing your missing teeth. Sometimes acrylic partial dentures will be used as a temporary denture after you have had teeth removed and are looking at other options of replacement.
Flexible dentures
Flexible dentures are a way to avoid the metal clips that are included with acrylic partial dentures, which may be uncomfortable for some people.
Unfortunately flexible dentures can lead to gum shrinkage or gum recession due to the nature of the materials used. They can also discolour slightly easier than other dentures.
Implant supported fixed dentures
Sometimes dental implants can be placed in your jaw surgically and a denture can be attached to these implants. Implant supported fixed dentures can sometimes be permanently fixed into your mouth which does not require removal at any point.
Alternatively and overdenture can be made to fit around the implants making the denture very stable and comfortable to use.
What are the alternatives to Dentures?
The main complaint that people have about dentures is that they are bulky and uncomfortable to wear compared to alternatives like a dental bridge or dental implant.
The cost of dental implants and dental bridges are higher than the cost of dentures, however the long-term benefits usually outweigh the cost for many people as unlike dentures; dental bridges and dental implants maintain in the jawbone over a long period of time. Dental implants are also much better for those who have a gag reflex or a sensitive mouth that can become irritated while supporting a denture.
